Phuket to get new weekend market

27 Feb 2012

The Phuket Boat Lagoon has announced ambitious plans to launch a weekend market early next month. While the principal aim of the market is to offer a trading venue for boat enthusiasts and maritime supplies, it will also offer stalls selling bric-a-brac and used items as well as the ubiquitous Thai standard of food and beverages.

Boon Yongsakul is on the management team at the Boat Lagoon and he said he had got the idea for a Phuket weekend market after learning about a similar venture in Brisbane, Australia. Mr Yongsakul said the Phuket version would not be exactly the same as its counterpart and would be adapted to fit in with Thai concepts and requirements.

The first market has been pencilled in for 10 March and will then be staged every Saturday and Sunday between 10:00 and 15:00. The venue for the market is a six-rai (2.4-acre) plot of land near to the Boat Lagoon’s principal entrance. The large area will be split up into sectors for boats, marine gear, general and second-hand items and food. There will also be a stage for live entertainment.

Mr Yongsakul said the Boat Lagoon eventually hoped to have 70 stalls and at present around 50 potential stallholders had so far expressed an interest in taking part in the weekly event. He added that the market would allow boat owners and the general public to buy and exchange products and equipment with considerable cost savings.
