Phuket to stage music extravaganza

10 Oct 2011

The Phuket Musiq Festival has been scheduled to take place later this year and will honour the occasion of King Bhumibol Adulyadej's 84th birthday. The Musiq festa, deliberately misspelt, will be staged at Phuket Town’s Saphan Hin Park in the four day period beginning on 2 December and concluding on the king’s actual birthday on 5 December.

A budget of six million Baht has been allocated for the event and has been provided by sponsors Singha Group and the Phuket Provincial Administration. It will be aimed at local and international musicians as well as audiences of locals and international visitors.

It is hoped that jazz musicians will feature prominently as this is the Thai king’s favoured music genre. The king plays the alto saxophone and has composed various jazz pieces. He has also previously played with jazz luminaries such as Benny Goodman during overseas trips.

Leading musical artistes including Akha from Chiang Rai, Lanna Commins and Todd Tongdee have already said that they will perform at what promises to be an exciting jamboree. There will be performances each evening from 17:00 to 23:00 and the grand finale on the last night will be broadcast on national television.

There will be displays at the concert venue that commemorate King Bhumibol’s important role in and contributions to contemporary Thai society. The concerts will give visitors the opportunity of taking in Phuket’s latest tourism draw, the nearby light and sound fountain.
