New Phuket visitor attraction to open

26 Sep 2011

A grand opening for Phuket’s newest visitor attraction, a light and music fountain, has been scheduled for this week. The fountain at Saphan Hin Park in Phuket City is expected to be in place today and synchronized spurts will hopefully begin this evening.

The fountain will depict the history of the Phuket Vegetarian Festival as told by popular performer Tongdee Lavelle. City authorities say there will be three half-hour performances every evening with start times of 19:00, 20:00 and 21:00.

The Phuket Provincial Administration’s president, Paiboon Upatising, said last Tuesday that workers were putting the finishing touches to the fountain and testing it to make sure it would be ready for its stage debut. He added that the fountains would squirt during the day, but without light and sound effects.

The light and music displays are free and will have narrations in both Thai and English. Themes will change with the months and festivals of the year. In November, there will be a Loy Krathong show while December’s performances will honour King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s 84th birthday.

January’s shows will celebrate the New Year, February’s will mark Valentines’ Day and love, March’s will pay respects to revered Phuket Heroines Thao Srisoonthorn and Thao Thepkrasattri, and April’s will revolve around the traditional Songkran Festival and Thai New Year.

The final word from Mr Upatising, who said he believed the fountain would become one of Phuket’s biggest draws and seeing one of its shows would be on the itinerary of all tourists visiting the island.
