Longer term rentals in Phuket

this could be your home...for a price

Holidaymakers arriving on Phuket often grow so enamoured of it that after a few days many decide they never want to leave. For most people, commitments in the real world render this an impossibility and they have to make do with spending a few extra weeks or months in paradise.

Accommodation on the island is almost always cheaper when rented by the week, month or longer. There are now numerous options for longer term rentals in Phuket which enable tourists to stretch their Baht out for a bit longer. Some guest houses and hotels on the island cut rates significantly for guests staying on a month or so.

People planning on staying three months or more will probably find it easier to rent a condominium or villa for the duration of their sabbatical. Apartments and villas for long-term stays can be found by browsing through online estate agent’s websites or by checking the classified ads in the Phuket Gazette.

Rents vary from as little as 5,000-6,000 a month to more then 100,000 and are usually cheaper away from beaches and in residential areas. People renting long-term are typically required to deposit two or three months up front as surety against any damage and utility bills. Water and electric are billed separately and before moving in it is a good idea to check the unit rate is on a par with other locations in the district.

There are a number of condominium projects dotted around west coast beach resorts where there are quite often vacancies on long-term rentals. A recent addition to these is the Unity Patong. This seven-storey project is 500 metres from Patong’s legendary entertainment precinct and beach, yet is far enough away to seem almost tranquil.

Stylish studio and one-bedroom condos at the Unity start at around 24,000 Baht a month on one-year leases and come with air-conditioners and fully equipped kitchens. A highlight of the Unity is its rooftop swimming pool and tropical garden.

Tatum Mansion Hotel is less than two minutes walk from Patong Beach and is at the heart of the resort’s myriad draws. The Tatum has three different classes of room which are equipped with facilities that include cable television and refrigerators. Daily rates are heavily discounted for long-stay visitors.

Ormthong Apartments is in Kathu District and around halfway between Patong Beach and Phuket town. Studio rooms with en-suite bathrooms, balconies, satellite televisions and air-conditioning are available by the month for 7,000 Baht. The only snag with staying here is that guests need their own transport if they wish to go out in the evening.

Kata Gardens Apartment sits on the hill that divides the beaches of Kata Yai and Kata Noi. This complex has one and two bedroom apartments for rents which are spacious and decorated in a contemporary Thai style. The units boast wireless internet access, satellite television, kitchens and bathrooms with bath tubs. Swimming pools and a fitness centre round off the attractions at Kata Gardens.

PHV Apartments is located on Sirirat Road and is two kilometres from Patong. Units at this complex range in size from studios to three-bedroom suites. All units feature the latest technology and fixtures, while the complex as a whole has a kiddie’s pool, a large swimming pool and a gym among its abundant assets. PHV offers three, six and twelve month rentals.

Sea Blue Phuket Guesthouse is a budget option in Patong. Although this establishment does have backpackers’ dorms, it does have a number of immaculate rooms which can be rented by the month and only require a 1,000 Baht deposit. Rooms are equipped with refrigerators, air-conditioners and satellite televisions. Luxury rooms feature a Jacuzzi.

Kamala Hills is, as its name implies, in the hills behind the beach area of Kamala. Penthouse and three-bedroom apartments are housed in low-rise structures and offer full facilities including washing machines as well as bed linen. There are four swimming pools contained within the grounds of the apartment complex.

Chinotel is a great option for people wishing to stay in Phuket Town. Its location on Ranong Rd is at the heart of this vibrant town. The trendy design of the hotel’s interior contrasts pleasingly with the old Sino-Portuguese architecture outside it. Rooms are fitted with plush beds, air conditioning and LCD televisions. Along with many of the other Old Town hotels, the Chinotel will quote monthly accommodation rates if asked.

The Happy Elephant is a pristine resort situated near Rawai and Nai Harn Beach. Accommodation options here include pool side villas and deluxe rooms. All of the room choices have been elegantly furnished and offer all the facilities and services needed for a luxury holiday. Monthly rates are around 30 per cent cheaper than standard ones.

People who wish to rent larger premises for long stays on Phuket can check the online listings of property management companies such as Phuket Villa Rentals. This Cherng Talay based company provides a personal service and has vacant villas in most regions of Phuket.
