Museum extravaganza hits Phuket

17 Sep 2012

An extravaganza being staged by museums from across the southern Thai peninsula is due to roll into town on Friday. The curators and other staff at 30 museums have united to offer Phuket holidaymakers and residents the cultural experience of a lifetime.

Four different locations in Phuket Old Town are the venues for the three-day Southern Thailand Museum Festival. Rare and ancient historic exhibits and artefacts garnered from the southern regions as well as traditional performances such as hun lakhon lek (puppet dancing) are being provided for the edification of visitors.

The free festival will take place between 21 and 23 September. Doors at the venues are open from 09:00 to 20:00. The four venues are the Old Town Tourist Information Office, the Thaihua Museum, the Thaihua Club and the Chalermrat Cultural Centre.

Staff at the Tourist Information Office on Thalang Road will provide directions to the other three venues. Old Town mayor Somjai Suwansupana told media representatives last week that the historic quarter was the perfect location for such a prestigious event.

He said the town’s beautifully preserved Sino-Portuguese buildings and cultural heritage had left the National Discovery Museum Institute with no choice other than to stage the festival here. The 1Stop Phuket sightseeing guide gives an overview of the Old Town’s highlights and the museums page has more information about the permanent museums on the island.
