Dive to spruce up Phuket reefs

24 Sep 2012

Dive and eco-tourism groups are banding together this weekend to give reefs in the surrounding Andaman Sea a clean-up. Newly formed Go-Eco Phuket says the Dive-for-Debris set for this coming Sunday looks like being the biggest ever such event staged in Asia.

From what was originally planned as a small exercise to spruce up the reefs, the event has now gained backing from PADI’s Project AWARE Foundation and sponsorship from establishments such as the local British Business Association and the Hilton and Arcadia holiday resorts. PADI said last week that more sponsors were needed and interested parties should e-mail its regional representative.

Around 200 divers have already registered to take part in the clean-up and 13 boat operators have said they will provide transportation. Two weeks ago Go-Eco staged a meeting designed to drum up support for the event.

The Marine and Coastal Resources Department confirmed it would provide a speedboat as well as two dinghies for beach clean-ups. The Royal Thai Navy Region and Marine Police said they would draught in security personnel.

As part of the day’s activities, another Phuket environmental group will run one-hour educational classes for youngsters at Chalong Pier. Professional divers will be staying overnight and the plan is to get them to raise larger items of debris off the coral and the seabed.

The Phuket Gazette says it will also be sponsoring the dive and will televise the day’s proceedings live on True Visions’ channel 99. This 1Stop Phuket dive guide gives an overview of the activity on the island and the different PADI course options.
