Building starts at Phuket Airport

10 Sep 2012

The building project that will see passenger capacity at Phuket’s international airport doubled has finally got underway. Airports of Thailand (AoT) spokesperson Pratheep Wichittho told media representatives at a Phuket hotel last weekend that work on the 6 billion Baht project had begun.

He told conference attendees that contractors had a different access point to the airport and the construction work should therefore have little impact on the flying public. Wing commander Wichittho added that security procedures for the duration of the project would be enforced.

Prathuang Sornkham, the airport’s director, backed the AoT by saying Level Three measures were in force and these included arbitrary vehicle checks. The director also stressed that just because construction work was in progress, taxi drivers would not be permitted to buttonhole passengers as soon as they passed through the Arrivals hall.

Once the expansion is complete, there will be plenty of space for cabbies to park up because the amount of parking spaces is being increased threefold from 500 to 1,500. Zones for taxis, buses and private cars will also be clearly delineated.

The terminal at the airport will be able to process up to 12.5 passengers annually when the project is complete. The current capacity is 6.5 million, but figures released by the AoT for 2011 show that this amount was surpassed by 2 million and contributed to delays in passengers being processed.

At the moment, there are no applications by airlines to increase the number of flights to and from the airport. Mr Sornkham said the airport would still handle 20 flights per hour, but its efficiency would be augmented with new passenger boarding gantries and aircraft bays.
