Patong will welcome early Songkran battles

9 Apr 2012

Patong will celebrate the traditional Thai New Year a day earlier than the rest of the country when Songkran on the Beach begins on Thursday. The beach and promenade area of the popular Phuket Island resort will see pitched water fights where the only damage is wet clothes or beachwear.

The two-day Patong water fight has been given the Churchill slogan “we shall fight them on the beaches” by officials at the local branch of the Tourism Authority of Thailand.

Although it is being marketed with a WWII adage, the most serious weapons on display at Patong will be high-tech water-guns and buckets of iced water. Revellers mostly soak each other with their various items of water weaponry and the whole occasion is a fun-filled event for both Thai and international tourists.

TAT Phuket director Bangornrat Shinaprayoon said that as Easter had fallen just before Songkran this year, there had been a massive influx of holidaymakers already. The director added that the extra visitors could only add to the party atmosphere prevalent over the festive Songkran holiday.

In place of the cancelled 2012 Phuket City Songkran festival on Thalang Road, TAT said it has organised a road rally for Friday and Saturday. Each vehicle and its occupants entering will be taken on an odyssey from the island up to Phang Nga and Ranong and then back again.

Somboon Jirayoot, the president of the local tourism operators association, said that most hotels, resorts and guest houses had reported they were already 80 per cent full and there were still bookings coming in.
