Organisers delay Phuket Bike Week

2 Apr 2012

The organisers of the annual Phuket Bike Week have deferred this year’s event until 20 April. The 18th of the annual big bike meetings had originally been scheduled for the three days between the 6 and 8 April.

Spokesperson Wittaya Singkala said on behalf of organisers Thailand West Coast Ride that the decision to put back the event was made out of respect as the country is in mourning for Princess Bejaratana Rajasuda and her funeral is being held on 9 April.

The original Bike Week dates also clashed with Phuket Administrative Organization elections to select a new president. The organisers announced the date change at a media meeting held in Phuket Town’s Dragon Park last Wednesday.

In previous years, the Bike Week has attracted up to 10,000 big-bike enthusiasts, many of whom arrive on the island with their own unique machines. It allows bikers to view bikes from all over the world with Harley Davidsons, custom built choppers and vintage BSAs among the machines on display.

The 2012 Bike Week has the slogan ASEAN Rides Together and will include an exhibition of big bikes at Patong football ground, a best bike contest, a party at Loma Park and planting banana trees alongside the Patong to Kamala route.

Vendors attending the event sell a range of souvenirs, bike parts and accessories, helmets and leathers. Additional Phuket Bike Week programme details are available on the organiser’s web pages.
