Patong gears up for annual carnival

12 Dec 2011

Patong is preparing itself for the annual carnival that signals the start of the peak tourist season. The week-long extravaganza will begin with a low-key merit-making donation ceremony to monks in Loma Park early on Thursday morning.

At 17:00 the Patong Carnival’s official opening ceremonies will be marked with a colourful parade along the seaside resort’s promenade. Carnival organisers have coined the slogan ‘A Thai celebration never likely to be forgotten’ in the hope that this will epitomise an annual event that they hope will eventually rival Brazil’s more famous Rio Carnival.

Two weeks ago Patong mayor Pian Keesin announced at a media conference that the opening procession had been given a two-million Baht budget and was themed around Andaman region flowers and participants and floats would resemble flora.

After the end of the opening parade, two stages will become the focal point of shows and live music performances with reggae, folk acts and comedy routines set to feature prominently. One of the stages is at the beach end of Soi Bangla and the other on a grassy area across from Loma Park.

As well as the budget allocations from Patong authorities, funds have been provided by Chang beer brewers ThaiBev, the Krung Thai and Kasikorn banks, and Ocean Plaza Bangla.

Mayor Pian Keesin also said at the press conference that he hoped local residents would be nice to visitors and that there would be no overcharging or other cheating incidents reported. Patong Carnival runs from the 15 to 21 December.
