Phuket surf festival relocates

5 Sep 2011

Sponsors of the Quiksilver Thailand Surf Competition have moved the venue for this year’s event to the resort of Patong. The festival was previously held at Kata Beach, but announcing the change in late July, Surached Mungthong told media representatives that the endorsement of it as an international event meant that it would benefit from being staged at Phuket’s iconic seaside resort.

Mr Mungthong is the general manager of sponsor Quiksilver Thailand. The change in venue was announced to coincide with the opening of the firm’s store in the Jungceylon Shopping Centre in Patong. This location and the Surf Hut on Jungceylon’s ground floor are the registration points for surfing aficionados wishing to take part.

The surf competition at Patong will take place between the 21 and 24 September at Patong Beach across from the Phuket Graceland Resort. Organisers say that in excess of 100 surfers have already registered and they hope that by the time the event begins there will be 300 entrants. Categories include long and short-board with different age ranges.

This year will see the Patong fest included in the ASEAN Surfing Championship, with additional events to be held in Malaysia, Indonesia, Taiwan and Korea.

Those heading to the surf fest to spectate will spot the venue easily as beach tents set up mark the location. The event also offers fashion shows, family fun and a free rock concert on the final night.
