Massive cruise liner to dock at Phuket

A leading passenger cruise ship operator has announced ambitious plans that will see a massive luxury liner weigh anchor at Phuket. Royal Caribbean International says that the Singapore-based Voyager of the Seas will head for the Thai resort island on its maiden voyage next year.

The fourteen-deck vessel is capable of carrying 3,800 passengers and will start sailing next May. The voyages to Phuket have been timed to coincide with school holidays in Singapore and will allow voyagers between three and five days on Phuket.

Royal Caribbean’s executive vice president, Michael Bayley, said the vessel was one of the biggest and most contemporary cruise liners to have a home port in Asia. He added that once the vessel and its sister, Legend of the Seas, were fully operational, the company’s passenger capacity in Asia would be doubled.

Passenger accommodation aboard the Voyager of the Seas includes promenade staterooms and royal suites. A three-level restaurant, a state-of-the-art nightclub, an ice-skating rink, a shopping and café street, and a mini-golf course are among the onboard guest amenities.

As well as Phuket, the Voyager of the Seas will also sail to Penang, Ho Chi Minh City, Hong Kong and Shanghai. Mr Bayley finished by saying he hoped that the boat’s luxury cabins and fabulous guest facilities would be the catalyst that would see more large passenger cruise liners serve Asian ports.
