Snooker stars head for Phuket today

Some of snooker’s biggest stars will be competing at a hotel in the Phuket resort of Patong from today. The SangSom Phuket Cup 2011 begins today and continues through until 11 June with the local player known to legions of fans as James Wattana taking part.  

The venue for the eagerly awaited event is the Grand Ballroom at the Royal Paradise Hotel & Spa at Patong Beach. Wattana, who is currently using his Thai name of Ratchapol Pu-Ob-Orm, will be competing against 18 other entrants, which include Englishmen Alfred Burton and Stuart Bingham.

The tournament venue is capable of holding up to 200 spectators and admission is being offered free of charge. Due to the popularity of last year’s event, this year’s is expected to be well attended and snooker fans are advised to arrive early.

The tournament winner will receive 100,000 Baht prize money, while any player who manages the maximum 147-break will get a bonus award of 147,000 Baht.

Phuket governor Tri Augkaradacha voiced his support for the SangSom Phuket Cup, saying that it was another major happening on the island’s event calendar that would draw tourists. He added that it would complement events such as next year’s National Youth Games and prove that Phuket was proficient at staging all kinds of occasions.
