Phuket to host ASEAN summit

Guests staying in one of the top hotels in Phuket at the moment might have noticed the staff seem particularly tense at the moment. That could be because Phuket’s most prominent hotels are locked in a bidding war to host the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) plus six summit.

The summit was originally planned to be hosted in Bangkok and then Pattaya, but protestors stormed both venues recently, making Phuket the next best choice.

The Phuket Post has reported that Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva plans to hold the summit in Phuket next month as the area is seen as a government stronghold. There is only one bridge only the island, which means it will be easy for police to stop protestors from storming the summit in Phuket.

Phuket’s governor Wichai Praisa-Ngob seems confident that the summit would be peaceful if it were held in Phuket, commenting to the Phuket Post that “Phuket and the citizens of the Andaman regions are in harmony, and there will be no trouble here. Everyone will be ready to protect Phuket, and they won’t allow any protesters to interrupt the summit.

Although there may be little trouble from protestors, the real conflict will be between Phuket’s hotels as they struggle for victory.
