Geography of Phuket - maps
Phuket is Thailand's largest island, an elongated neo-peninsula extending into the Andaman sea. Looking at the Phuket map, a series of perfect bays with ideal beaches stretches down the west side of the island, while much of the east side consists of mangrove and lesser beaches. Phuket town, the main commercial centre, is situated near the large natural harbour of Chalong Bay. The south of Phuket island's map has rocky headlands providing some good views. Overall much of the island is fairly hilly with a low range running down the centre, and headlands separating each of the bays on the West side.
Further afield, maps of Phuket and the surrounding area reveal a massive protected bay to the east - Pha Nga Bay which is famous for its remarkable karst pillars that jut out of the sea. This exceptional scenery continues to the southeast where Krabi is located - a more down to earth and popular resort venue. The world famous Phi Phi islands are located further south on this area map, about an hour by fast boat from Phuket.
